"When we think about schools, it usually evokes images of places separated from the larger community, place where students go to learn. Occasionally during the school day students venture outside classroom walls to take field trips meant to enhance the academic rigor of their classroom experience, but the classroom as the primary vehicle for educational success remains largely unchallenged despite often questionable levels of achievement. Yet, a few public schools across the country are trying a different approach to engaging students in the learning process, using the community and neighborhoods where students live as classrooms - creating not only a different type of learning environment, but a different kind of student. Schools That Change Communities focuses on a diverse range of K-12 public schools in five states - Massachusetts, Maryland, South Dakota, Oregon, and California - that have the potential to refocus the national debate around the direction educational reform should take."

The program will also air throughout much of the U.S. on PBS World stations including NYC, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Detroit.  Potential viewers should check their local listings to verify times (outside Boston).    Hope you can spread the word in the Boston area and elsewhere.

Youth Power

We areWe are excited to report back on two incredible days of action.  The YJC action on Tuesday was one of our most powerful to date featuring a die-in the State House.  Here is some information about it and attached are some great photos:

The question has been posed to the Youth Jobs Coalition, why stage a die-in and use the #Black Spring hashtag today? why put pressure on now?

First and foremost, we don't know the final budget so we need to keep the pressure up until we know that we are getting $12 million for YouthWorks. We know that the members of the senate and house ways and means committees will go to conference and debate the merit of our budget. They cannot forget who we are or why it matters to fund YouthWorks at $12 million.
