ABCD's Christmas Spirit in Mattapan

On Thursday December 20, 2012 the Mattapan ABCD branch held their annual Toy Drive at the Old Mattapan Library on 10 Hazelton Street. The drive was able to donate over 350 toys to kids in the Mattapan community before the holidays.
Kids were able to have the opportunity to take part in coloring activities as well as getting a light holiday snack. To top off their excitement, kids were able to sit on Santa Claus’s lap, tell him what they wanted for Christmas, and take pictures with him.
Santa Claus who is also known as ABCD’s Anthony Raines Case Manager says, “This was a good opportunity to give back to the community of Mattapan. It was great to see the look on the kids faces when they saw Santa. This might have been the first time for some of those kids seeing Santa I could tell because of their reactions and was a great experience to take part in.”
It is great to see ABCD continuing their efforts to serve the community of Mattapan especially during the holidays.

Mattapan Holiday Gathering For Annual Tree Lighting

On Friday December 7, 2012 Main Streets hosted the 2nd annual Christmas tree lighting in Mattapan. Residents of Mattapan gathered together at the Mattapan Community Health Center to begin the festivities. With a beautifully decorated health center, snacks, presents, and goodies there was no way for everyone not to be in the Christmas spirit.
The Greater Boston Youth Chorus led Mattapan residents out of the center to the square where children excitedly saw Santa Claus and company. Mayor Thomas Menino reminds Mattapan the meaning of Christmas is not only about presents, but to spend time with loves ones and appreciate what you have before switching on the lights for Mattapan’s tree. > Read more

ABCD Celebrates 50 Years of Serving the Community

Action for Boston Community Development celebrated their 50th year anniversary of providing basic services and innovative programs that help empower individuals, families, and communities in Boston to overcome poverty, live with dignity, and achieve their full potential. On Friday November 2, 2012, ABCD hosted their 50th anniversary Gala at the Boston Marriott Copley Place Hotel.
With over 1,100 people in attendance to the event, the ABCD Gala turned out to be amazing. Mark Shiver accepted the ABCD Hall of Fame award on behalf of his late father, Sargent Shriver, who headed up the Peace Corps and the War on Poverty programs in the 1960s. To end off this amazing night, jazz legend Nat King Cole’s Daughter and also Grammy Winner, Nathalie Cole performed some of her and her father’s hits.
Congratulations ABCD for this milestone accomplishment and working to serve the Boston community for another 50 years.
