Community Service Opportunities!

Spring is finally here and with it, some great opportunities for community service in Mattapan.

 

Saturday, April 12, 9 a.m., Ernest Cherry Park, Orlando St., Mattapan, MA 02126.  A cleanup of the Shangri-La Garden, in celebration of World Service Day, in partnership with the Mattahunt-Wheelock Community Center.  Come enjoy the warmer weather and beautify our community!

 

Friday, April 25, 3:30-6:00 p.m., ABCD Mattapan Family Service Center, 535 River St., Mattapan, MA 02126.  STAND Against Racism!  This event, part of the YWCA's National STAND Against Racism Day, will include activities, film clips, discussion groups, and opportunities to take a pledge against racism. 5 adult volunteers are needed for general event support.

Free Summer Program for 13 Year Olds: Youth Engaged in Action!

13 year olds sometimes fall through the cracks of summer engagement.  They are too old for camp and too young for summer jobs.  However, they are at a critical age.  Youth Engaged in Action (YEA) is a free 3-week ABCD program beginning July 14, 2014 focusing on job readiness, financial literacy and civic engagement.  The deadline to apply is May 30.  To learn more or apply, please visit www.bostonabcd.org or call (617)348-6583.

Stand University for Parents Free Workshop for Parents at the Mattahunt Wheelock Community Center

Stand for Children Massachusetts is launching a new initiative known as Stand University for Parents (Stand UP). Stand UP is a free 10 week class for parents, grandparents, or guardians, to support them in getting more involved with their student’s education. Each class is an hour and a half and focus on topics such as:

 

·         Creating an effective learning environment at home

·         Supporting literacy through a variety of techniques

·         Understanding school and test data

·         Partnering with teachers and administrators at school

Basic Computer Class for Seniors to begin at ABCD Mattapan Family Service Center

Beginning Wednesday, March 19th, the ABCD Mattapan Family Service Center will offer a Basic Computer Class for Seniors, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the ABCD MFSC, 535 River St., Mattapan, MA 02126.  Space is limited so if you are interested call (617)298-2045 today!

Boston Fair Housing Commission Poster Contest

This poster contest in honor of the Fair Housing Act is open to Boston students in grades 1 through 12.  Posters must be 18" x 14" and must depict the contest theme: "One Bostno, a Hub of Diversity".  Prizes such as an iPad, Tablet and cash will be awarded to the top 3 winners in each grade level.  Entry deadline is April 12.  Visit www.cityofboston.gov/civilrights for entry details.  Spread the word to artistic students you know and good luck to all entrants!

Come out next Thursday, March 6 for a Community Assembly on Public Safety!

Please come out this Thursday, March 6, to the Mattapan Branch Libary (at 1350 Blue Hill Ave., Mattapan, MA 02126) at 5:30 p.m. for a community assembly around Public Safety.  In light of various current events, representatives from community organizations will discuss positive, constructive responses to violence.  Representatives from the BPHC's Violence Intervention Project, the YWCA's police dialogues, and the B3 Police Department's Community Service Office and Crime Watch department will speak.  Refreshments will be provided.  For more information, please contact Eva Huston at eva.huston@bostonabcd.org or (617)298-2045x219.  Tell your friends!
