A Great Turnout at Last Night's District 5 City Council Forum

The NAACP and MassVote, in collaboration with Mattapan United, Mattapan Square, Main Streets, and a number of community groups, sponsored a District 5 City Council Forum at the Mattahunt-Wheelock Community Center last night, September 16, 2013.  Wheelock faculty member William Rodriguez acted as moderator, posing probing questions and touching on hot-button issues.  The eight candidates were allotted two minutes each to answer two general questions as well as five specific questions and two audience-generated questions.

Each candidate had a different angle, but they all emphasized their deep local roots and desire to be a strong voice for residents of District 5 (Mattapan, Hyde Park, and Roslindale).  Overwhelmingly, they expressed support for an enhanced police review board, a greater balance between legislative and executive power in Boston, prioritizing youth jobs, and addressing the root causes of homelessness.
