Recap of Knowledge is Power: Busing & Desegregation Event

On Thursday, November 7, Mattapan United hosted the first in a three part series entitled Knowledge is Power.  This first meeting focused on busing and desegregation in the history of Boston's public schools and was facilitated by our partner Union of Minority Neighborhoods.  They displayed a timeline of Boston's educational history and screened a short film.  Afterward, there was a story circle when everyone who attended could share their reactions to the film and their personal stories.  Many attendees had lived the reality of the film and their stories were quite powerful.  Some themes emerged including the recognition that the past is alive and well in the present and the conviction that we cannot watch educational inequalities happen and stand by and do nothing.  These common threads will inform the direction of the next two events in the Knowledge is Power series.  Stay tuned.  Thanks so much to the Union of Minority Neighborhoods and all participants.

This Thursday November 7: "Knowledge is Power" Education Series: Busing and Desegregation

This month's meeting of the Mattapan United Assembly will focus on education, specifically the history of busing and desegregation in Boston's schools.  Over the summer, we participated in what was the start of a series on education.  Stand for Children came to discuss the challenges and successes of Boston's public schools.  After lots of conversation it was clear that this talk was far from over.  Please join Mattapan United and the Union of Minority Neighborhoods for the first part in a three-part series entitled Knowledge is Power.  We'll be able to hear and share our stories with our community.  A short film will be shown and dinner will be provided for all participants.  Come and bring your friends!

Thursday November 7 from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.

Impressive Turnout at Mayoral Forum on Communities of Color

Some 500 interested community members turned out at this past Wednesday's Mayoral Forum on Communities of Color.  The event, held at the Reggie Lewis Center, was sponsored by Mattapan United, along with Boston NAACP, MassVOTE, the Urban League, and a myriad of other community partners.  Both mayoral candidates, John Connolly and Martin Walsh, spoke about how their campaign plans would affect Boston's communities of colors.  The moderator, award-winning journalist Liz Walker, asked them questions touching on business, jobs, housing, schools and public safety.  Throughout all their answers, both candidates expressed an abiding desire to bridge racial divides in Boston and make addressing racism a top priority, should they be elected.

For further coverage on the forum, see this Boston Globe article on the event: http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2013/10/23/mayoral-candidates-debate-focuses-communities-color/6t806ORcVqbsEf01MvKuuM/story.html
