Mattapan United Fairmount/Indigo Line Community Organizer- part-time

FAIRMOUNT/INDIGO LINE CDC COLLABORATIVE

MATTAPAN FAIRMOUNT COMMUNITY ORGANIZER (PART-TIME 25 hours/week)

The Fairmount CDC Collaborative has a focus on undertaking transit oriented development (mixed use affordable housing

with ground floor commercial), within a 1/2 mile radius of the proposed, new and existing Fairmount stops. With a focus

on transit equity, which takes the form of advocating to the State and other entities for the installation of the new stops,

and for "fair fares" and more frequent (nights and weekend) service on the Fairmount line, the Mattapan Fairmount

Community Organizer will provide leadership and support to the main organizing campaigns of the Fairmount Indigo

Line CDC Collaborative:

The Mattapan Fairmount Community Organizer will work with the Mattapan United Steering Committee and Fairmount

Collaborative CDC and Fairmount Coalition Organizers around support of these goals:

Organize the broader Mattapan Community around a “yes” vote in support of a new stop on the Fairmount line at

Blue Hill Ave/Cummings Hwy

o Getting the Mattapan Blue Hill Avenue/Cummins Highway station into construction. The long-term goal

is making the line part of the MBTA’s rapid transit system.

Organize community stakeholders to be involved and have meaningful input into the Fairmount Indigo Planning

Initiative’s Working Advisory Group (WAG) planning process sponsored by the Boston Redevelopment

Authority. Goal of the Mattapan WAG is to create a community-responsive economic development plan for the

Mattapan community as a stop on the Fairmount line in Mattapan is realized.

The Transit Equity campaign seeks to secure affordable consistent fares and increased service in Fairmount

Organize the support of elected officials in Mattapan (both City and State level) for leadership role in community

development plans for Mattapan

Responsibilities include:

Conduct door knocking and one on one outreach on a consistent basis to engage local residents, determine

community priorities, build relationships and support leaders in addressing Fairmount related community issues.

This includes doing many one on one, personal, face to face meetings with community residents in their homes, or

public spaces (restaurants, coffee shops, etc.), including often nights and week-ends when residents are available

in the Mattapan community

Manage the campaign to garner a “yes” vote to the siting of the stop on Fairmount in Mattapan.

Manage community input campaign into the BRA Fairmount Indigo Planning Initiative Working Advisory Group

Engage community partners, related advocacy organizations and public officials in our efforts.

Coordinate communication with appropriate Collaborative members and consultants

Attend key meetings with the Fairmount CDC Collaborative, the Fairmount Coalition and public partners and

bring back all relevant information to the Mattapan United Steering Committee

Outreach via door knocking, flyering, social media, attending community meetings to get support for the line

Attendance at key meetings with key players and residents in order to garnish support

Document progress via minutes, notes, emails, social media, etc., and timely disseminate same to stakeholders

Produce required funder, Mattapan United and/or Fairmount CDC Collaborative or Coalition reports

Other related duties as necessary

Ability to work flexible a schedule including nights and occasional weekends a must

Bachelors degree in related field with 3-5+ years’ experience as an Organizer

Demonstrated success with at least 1-2 large scale organizing campaigns

Proven ability to work with diverse groups and populations and in inner City neighborhoods

Ability to work with multiple constituencies and organizational partners

Experience with collaboratives, coalitions, and complex organizational structures and relationships

Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team

Excellent diplomatic and communication skills (written and verbal)

Excellent organizational skills, including being well-organized and attention to detail

Capacity to work on multiple campaigns and under timelines and deadlines

Experience using Microsoft Office programs and social media (Facebook, Twitter) for organizing purposes

Experience organizing in Boston preferably Mattapan

Ability to work flexible hours, including nights and occasional weekend a must

Multi-lingual in Haitian Creole or Spanish a plus

Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights and occasional weekends a must

This position will be based out of and supervised by ABCD Mattapan.

Part time position working 25 hours a week, salary commensurate with experience. Pro-rated leave time available,

however, health and dental insurance are not included with this position.
