Mattapan United Funds Computer Class Literacy

Mattapan United uses a portion of its early action funds to offer the community a computer class. Classes are being held at ABCD Mattapan Family Service Center on 535 River Street. 15 students attend the class that started on December 10, 2012 and will end on February 14, 2013.

The class focuses on preparing for the workforce through learning basic computer literacy, internet searching, email, and microsoft word. Students also learn job readiness skills through workshops focusing on job search, interview skills, and resume writing. Students comment on their progress: "We are learning to type more accurately, improving on typing skills, learning how to save on a removable storage device, formulating emails, creating and saving documents, and downloading and attaching documents in emails." Some students went from 7 words per minute to being able to type 19 words per minute.
Mattapan United is a community organizing process that connects residents and other leaders to define the future of Mattapan. This resident-led process, convened by ABCD Mattapan Family Service Center, will lead to a community contract that identifies strengths and challenges, and outlines solutions. Mattapan United envisions a community grassroots engagement process that creates an identity of Mattapan as a dynamic, desirable place to live, work and visit.
Join Mattapan United at their monthly meetings on the first Thursday evening of every month at the Mattapan Family Service Center at 535 River Street to take part in this initiative to improve Mattapan.
