The Health of Mattapan Community Meeting

On Thursday October 4, 2012 the community of Mattapan gathered at the Mattapan Community Health Center, which recently reopened its new center on 1575 Blue Hill Avenue. The meeting was held to discuss the health of the people in Mattapan and resources available in Mattapan to take care of personal health.

Dr. Huy Nguyen, Boston Public’s Health Commission’s Medical Director joined the event as well. He presented a PowerPoint to the community on current statistics on health issues people faced in Mattapan, reasoning’s, and comparing Mattapan data on a larger scale as well such as 23% of adults in Mattapan consume the recommended daily fruits and vegetables in 2010 and 10% of adults in Mattapan had diabetes in 2010. Mattapan residents were given the opportunity

to ask questions to Dr. Nguyen after the presentation to allow further explanation of the data.

The meeting was a great success, allowing people to have more awareness and the opportunity to sit down and discuss these issues. The program committee hopes to set up another meeting like this one in the future, using the evaluations given out at the event to address other issues people find important in Mattapan.
