Northeastern's Foundation Year is a program offered  to reach students who underperformed in high school and allows them the opportunity to benefit from a more structured learning environment. The program features rigorous academic activities, extensive support services, real-world experience, and all the privileges that come with being a Northeastern University student.

Boston LISC's Resilient Communities Resilient Families and Center for Women and Enterprise are joining forces to help entrepreneurs and small businesses in Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan. Great opportunity to get hands on training that is both accessible and affordable. 

If you know someone who has a business or wants to start a business, invite them to apply! The Business Innovation Challenge will offer 12 weeks of training on:

1.       Building a business plan

2.       Financing the business (especially start up or growth)

3.       Target Marketing
If you have an innovative idea but are trying to get it off the ground, here is your opportunity. Best part is it's free! Participants will be able to compete for a cash prize for innovative business plans and will receive follow up support from Entrepreneurs who have successfully run their own businesses.

Future Leaders and National Black College Alliance(NBCA) Host Mayoral Candidates Forum

It's debate season and there are many organizations and groups hosting mayoral forums. It is an important time in our city's future so do your part by attending these events and making sure in September, you make your voice heard. Please join us August 1, 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Roxbury Community College Media Center. There will be a lively discussion of the candidates' ideas for systems change, increased equity and pathways back to school, through postsecondary education and onto employment for youth.

Mattapan Farmers Market Open Every Saturday Until October

At the Church of the Holy Spirit parking lot, at 525 River Street in Mattapan Square, the  Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition's Farmers Market opened up July 13th and will be open on Saturdays from 10 am-1 pm until October 12th.
At the market you can find a wide variety of fresh, affordable, organic fruits and vegetables from local farms. Farmers at the market accept EBT/SNAP (Food Stamps), WIC, and Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Coupons. You can also look forward to nutrition workshops, cooking demos, physical activities, featured artists, Youth Day, Senior Day, Fall Harvest Festival, and more. ABCD Mattapan Family Service Center Aims to Prepare Youth for the Future

The Youth Computer Training Class at ABCD's Mattapan Family Service Center prepares young adults for future job opportunities by providing them with 20 hours of instruction weekly for 6 weeks around Microsoft Office applications, job readiness skills and financial literacy.   "We are preparing the youth for the job world," assistant instructor Nathaniel Kelly said.

BCYF "R.O.C.K.S The Block!!!" in Mattapan Tomorrow Thursday, July 18, 2013

Come on down to the Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) at Mildred Ave. Community Center tomorrow, July 18th, for a free Block Party from 5-7 pm . There will be a cookout along with many fun activities to enjoy with your friends and family like swimming, games and much more.
BCYF offers a range of affordable programs including preschool, school-aged & adult education, family literacy, youth employment, violence prevention & intervention, senior activities, recreation and enrichment. BCYF's 35 facilities are located throughout Boston.

Dismantlement of Police Station on Morton Street in the Works

What was once a neighborhood police station on 872 Morton street in Mattapan, is now  under demolition for the reconstruction of the Morton Street Bridge which will allow vehicle traffic over the tracks of the Fairmount Commuter Rail Line. 
According to the DOT, the demolition along with the construction of the Morton Street Bridge has an estimated cost of $9.7 million. The DOT expects to close the bridge for up to 10-days with it's timeline dates for closure from August 8, 2014 through August 18, 2014. Please plan accordingly during this time.
