What is Mattapan United? Mattapan United (MU) is a community-driven initiative aimed at improving the quality of lige for Mattapan residents. The initiative brings together residents alongside educational and civic leaders, business owners, nonprofit organizations, and local and State officials to collaborate on development and implementation of a Community Contract that aims to build a stronger, safer, healthier, and more vibrant Mattapan. The Steering Committee is comprised of residents, community organizations, and local business leaders.

Community Residents Gather Together For B3 Meeting To Discuss Human Trafficking

On Wednesday, March 20, 2013, B-3 held their monthly meeting at the Joseph Lee School at 155 Talbot Avenue Mattapan, MA 02124. This month's topic of discussion was human trafficking which included guest speaker Sergeant Detective Donna Gavin, a 30-year old veteran of the Boston Police Department and expert on human trafficking. She presented on the various reasons as to why people take part in human trafficking, the increase in this practice and resources available to help. 

 
"Usually when you think of human trafficking you think of abroad, but it is happening in our homes by our own kids by our own people. Most women doing human trafficking are at the end of the road. There is an increase because of the internet and the demand by men," Gavin states.
 
District B3 meets on the third Wednesday of every month at 6:00PM. The meetings give residents a chance to meet their police officers, talk about crime and other happenings in the community, and connect with neighbors and elected officials.

Mattahunt Community Center Receives Grant To Create College Readiness Program

The Mattahunt Wheelock Partnership Community Center will soon develop a college and career readiness program, thanks in part to a $15,000 grant provided by the Hamilton Charitable Company. The grant will be used to aid in the development of a comprehensive series of programs to support the Mattapan community and its young students. This will be a positive addition to the community in Mattapan.  
 

Make A Difference By Becoming An Social Capital Inc. Americorps Member!

Become an SCI AmeriCorps member!  Apply to join the team of SCI AmeriCorps members to build social capital in our communities through civic engagement opportunities.  They are currently accepting applications for positions that begin in Sept. 2013!  The host sites are located in Boston, Dorchester, Mattapan, Woburn, Lynn, Chinatown and Fall River.  SCI AmeriCorps members serve as either Volunteer Outreach Coordinators (VOC) or Youth Leadership Coordinators (YLC).
 
The mission of SCI Social Capital Inc. is to strengthen communities by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. We envision a nation where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the destiny of their communities. This increase in 'social capital' will result in communities that are safer, healthier and more vital.

Greenovate Boston Award Nominations Deadline Friday, March 29, 2013!

Greenovate Boston's initiative is to make Boston one of the greenest cities on the planet. Mayor Menino has a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2020 resulting in a greener and healthier city. Nominations are open for the 2013 Mayor's Greenovate Boston Awards, which recognize local sustainability leaders in three different categories: Business, Residential, and Sustainable Food Leadership.  The nominations deadline has been extended until March 29th so get your applications in ASAP!  > Read more

United Sisters of Color’s Prom Dress & Tuxedo Donation Day on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the Mattapan Square Library

United Sisters of Color is a human service organization of women who are committed to promoting social justice and providing services to youth, adults and families from underserved urban communities. Their goal is to establish positive relationships between Black and Latina women by providing outlets that are conducive to rebuilding bonds as well as giving back to the community.
 
United Sisters of Color is currently running aProm Dress & Tuxedo Drive for young people living in the Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan area who are in need of a dress or suit to wear to their prom and they cannot afford one. They have been collecting gently used gowns and suits since early February and we are holding another Donation Day on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at the Mattapan Square Library located at 1350 Blue Hill Avenue Mattapan, MA 02126.from 2:00PM-4:00PM. March Mattapan United Meeting Tonight Cancelled - Next Date April 4th!

Hello Mattapan United
 
Unfortunately the weather has not been our friend this month.Tonight’s Mattapan United’s meeting has been cancelled due to the weather. We have some great presentations lined up and want to make sure people will come out and are safe in their travels here.
 
Our next meeting will be our regularly schedule 1st of the month meeting on Thursday April 4th from 6-8pm
This meeting will have presentations on greening Mattapan and will focus on how YOU can become a Mattapan United Champion.
 
We encourage you all to take precaution out there.

Members of the MU Steering Committee Along With State Representative Linda Dorcena Forry Celebrate LISC 30th Year Anniversary!

Both Mattapan United's Pastor Zephir of Greater Boston Nazarene Compassionate Center and Viven Morris of Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition were honored for their hard work  and dedication to the Mattapan community. 
  
"We were overjoyed to be recognized at this event especially since we are doing the work we love to do. Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition cares so much about Mattapan and the health of Mattapan. It was an honor to celebrate the 30th anniversary of LISC and receieve this award," says Viven Morris. 

Mattapan United Community Assembly Meeting TOMORROW Tuesday, March 18, 2013 from 6:00PM-8:00PM at the ABCD Mattapan Office!

Due to the weather last week, Mattapan United has rescheduled our monthly assembly meeting for tomorrow Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at ABCD Mattapan Family Service Center located at 535 River Street Mattapan, MA 02126 from 6:00PM-8:00PM. There will be two presentations about greening Mattapan.
 
Vivien Morris of Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition will discuss the Greenway Initiative and two new projects being worked on. Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition mission is to promote a healthy living environment, with a focus on access to healthy foods and the promotion of physical fitness for all ages.
 
Jeremy Dick of Boston Natural Area Network (BNAN) will be discussing how to plant trees in the Mattapan area. BNAN's mission is to work to preserve, expand and improve urban open space through community organizing, acquisition, ownership, programming, development and management of special kinds of urban land. 
 
All are welcomed and encouraged to attend. 

Mayor's Youth Council Applications Available Until April 1st!

The Mayor's Youth Council is a group of high school juniors and seniors selected to serve as volunteer representatives of every neighborhood in the city. The young advocates outreach to Boston teens, inform them of existing opportunities and listen to suggestions on what the city can do to improve its youth oriented efforts. The City of Boston, in partnership with Northeastern University and the Boston Bar Association, has sponsored the Mayor's Youth Council since 1994.
 
The Applications are available from now until April 1st. As a representative you will have to attend 2 Tuesday evening meetings a month from 5:45PM-7:45PM.
